It isn't that obvious, but I'm switching over to requiring SSL on this website. There are a lot of reasons for this, some of them that I consider critical, but the really big one is: what you read is no one's business.

There are too many things that monitor traffic constantly. Some of them are sinister and have little oversight (as the Snowden documents have kind of shown), but also advertising, ISPs, and every other of the dozens of companies between our two computers.

SSL doesn't add that much traffic to the Internet, but privacy is something that doesn't really have a price. That is one reason why Google uses HTTPS (HTTP over SSL) by default. There are other places that do the same; I just happened to find a place that lets me get a certificate for a reasonable privacy loss.

Frankly, I don't hide what I am. There are stories that I am uncomfortable posting in today's climate (Father's Day Pact, Daughter of Justice, Special Treats) but most of what I write is good, violent porn that seems to be perfectly fine as long as I don't try to sell it. There aren't any secrets on this website. If I don't want it public, it isn't uploaded here.

I just don't think you reading it is anyone's business.
